Discovering Michigan State’s 1881 Observatory in 2023

This past May a group of students at Michigan State unearthed a foundation to the school’s first observatory built in 1881, 142 years later. The Campus Archaeology Program cross-referenced the location with historical maps then a ground-penetrating radar survey revealed that the foundation was well intact. Next summer a larger excavation project is scheduled to uncover the rest of the foundation and any other artifacts on the scene.
