Northern Black Widow Spider

April 11, 2024

The common Northern Black Widow Spider can be spotted throughout the eastern United States, and its distinctive red “hour glass” marking on the underside of its black abdomen is a clear identifier. Black widow bites are infrequent because the spider is very timid, preferring flight over fight. Good thing too—the venom is 15 times more toxic than that of rattlesnakes. Fear not, the low dose bite injection results in less than 1% mortality.
